Modern technique

Probably the most difficult dance style to describe because modern dance has no boundaries in its creativity. The wide range of music used in this dance style dictates the emotional response. For example, a solo guitar, a gospel choir or an experimental composer will inspire the teacher's choreography. This gives the student the richest experience as you explore this multi faceted dance style.

Level 1: For adults with little or no dance experience.
Level 2: For dancers with 2 or more years of modern experience.
Level 3: For intermediate dancers.
Levels 4: For advanced, pre-professional or professional-level dancers
.

Levels 2/3/4-  on Tuesday mornings is a new class offered by Brandy Baybutt.  Students of these levels of modern can enjoy this class.   The format is a brief warm up,  then simple but moving combinations that keep everyone dancing constantly.  A great work out.  Level 2 students can get extra practice at learning short combinations,  and more advanced dancers can hone their technique in an enjoyable and non performing class.

And also new this year:   a drop in int/advanced modern class on saturdays,  2:30 - 4 Pm    taught by Leah Wickes.    cash or cheques only,   this drop in class is an experiment to see if there is a desire for the drop in format.   beginning Sat.  Sept 24th.

Improv (not currently available)

Spontaneous movement for dancers of all levels, designed to stimulate creativity and improve performance.  According to Lynda, in a perfect dance study, improvisation should be mandatory! This class may not be running this year.  We will have to see how registration and demand goes.

Ballet

Level 1: For those with little or no ballet experience.
Levels 2 & 3: For dancers with intermediate to advanced ballet technique (please consult with David or Amalia for placement).

A favourite in our school.  With our two teachers,  Lia and Jesse, students get the wild, crazy, sexy, and pumped up moves of the Hip Hop world in a way that focuses on one thing: having fun.

Floor Barre

Strength training using a combination of ballet, core stabilization, yoga and boot camp for improved placement and flexibility.  An hour of hell on the floor, but with great results.  Always a popular class.

Jazz/Ethno Funk

Two joyful, grounded, groove inspired dance experiences. Definitely the most fun you will have while dancing! Jazz can be powerful, percussive, expressive and lyrical. The class studies solid jazz technique while exploring choreography influenced by a large range of musical styles, from Miles Davis to Rhiana. A high energy class that is always moving.  Ethno Funk focusses on a wide range of ethnic music while you get down with your bad self.

Flamenco

Flamenco classes will explore the traditional Flamenco dance form which originated in the south of Spain. The technique will cover: braceo (arms), florea (hand movement), torso  (upper body), cadera (hips) and percussive elements including palmas (handclapping), body percussion and pitos (snaps). Focus is also given to interpretation of the music and adapting to diverse palos (flamenco song styles).

Rust

For older dancers (50 plus) and just for the love of it. Easy on all the joints of the older body. A class for dancers who have nothing more to prove!

Big Dance

Big Dance is a class for large people.  This year,  Big Dance will be learning Tribal Fushion,   a kind of Belly Dance.   It is new this year,  and we are excited to see our big ladies in a class of their own.

African

Dance to the infectious rhythms of traditional West African dance; there are no boundaries. While learning rhythm and dance, students explore freedom of movement and expression and see the connection of African dance to newer age dance forms.

Belly Dance

Experience the exotic movements and vibrant rhythms of the Middle East. From traditional origins to the modern day fusion, these classes will focus on technique, grace, and form. Classes are designed to suit all body types. Level 1 is for beginner dancers and Level 2 is for dancers with belly dance experience, or significant training in other dance styles.
